Biographical history

Basswood United Church existed in the community of Basswood, southeast of Shoal Lake in the Rural Municipality of Saskatchewan, from 1925 to 1984. Knox Presbyerian Church was the predecessor to Basswood United. Knox Presbyterian Church was built in 1901 in Basswood with the intention of serving as a union church. In order to affiliate itself with the churches of Fairmount and Cadurcis and secure the services of a minister, the church in Basswood had to adopt a Presbyterian denomination. In 1925, the first United minister was Rev. A.D. Watson. A Vestry was added to the church in 1934, and the choir loft was enlarged in 1964. From 1901 to 1960 the congregations of Basswood, Fairmount and Cadurcis formed a pastoral charge. In 1960, Newdale and Onanole were added to the charge. In 1961, Fairmount Church closed its doors and its members joined Basswood. In 1973, the Basswood Pastoral Charge joined the Minnedosa-Rapid City Wider Parish. Basswood United Church closed in 1984 and its members transferred to Cadurcis. The combined congregation of Cadurcis later joined the Rapid City and Area Pastoral charge. The Basswood United Church was sold in 1988 and a community cairn was erected with some of the sale proceeds.
