Biographical history
Anthony Williams was born in Naples, Italy. The family moved to Boston, Massachusetts when Anthony was still a child. He began his training in gymnastics when he was twelve years old in Boston. He began ballet training at the Boston School of Ballet as a way to augment his gymnastics skills, but nine months later he quit Grade Twelve to focus on a dance career. He made his professional debut with the Boston Ballet and continued to perform with them for three years before joining the Joffrey Ballet as a member of the corps de ballet. He would later be promoted to demi-soloist. He returned to the Boston Ballet in 1969, where he eventually promoted to Principal Dancer. He joined the Royal Winnipeg Ballet in June of 1973 as a soloist the same year that he performed with the Gulbenkian Ballet of Portugal. He was promoted to Principal Dancer the following year. He left the RWB in 1976. Two years later, he joined the Boston Repertory Ballet. At the same time, he began a teaching career, and taught Boston Repertory Ballet School, Wellesley College, Boston Conservatory, Boston Ballet School and Walnut Hill School. He performed with the National Ballet of Norway from 1981 to 1982. Anthony is the founder of the Jamaica Plain School of Dance and Ballet Rox as well as the co-founder of the Ballet Theatre of Boston. In 2015, he founded the Tony Williams Ballet, also in Jamaica Plain, Massachussets , and is currently the artistic director of City Ballet of Boston, which he founded in 2018.
