André Lewis was born January 16, 1955 in Hull, Quebec. He began his ballet training at Nesta Toumine’s Classical Ballet Studio in Ottawa. He entered the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School Professional Division in 1975 and after graduation in 1979 joined the Royal Winnipeg Ballet as a member of the corps de ballet. He was promoted to soloist in 1982. In 1984, he was appointed artistic coordinator for the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and was named associate artistic director in 1990. André served as interim artistic director several times in the 1990s before being officially named artistic director on March 7, 1996. He continues to guest teach and also stages Romeo and Juliet around the world. He received the Order of Manitoba in 2022.
Historique de la conservation
The records of André Lewis came to the Royal Winnipeg Ballet as a transfer of records from the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and André Lewis as well as by members of the Alumni Association.

The André Lewis fonds includes the following series: biographical information (1978-2015); student records (1974-1978); RWB Dancer records (1979-1988); Associate/Artistic Director records (1989-2015); photographs (1979-2005); and videocassettes.
