Biographical history

Haldon Darryl Allan Eastman was born July 6, 1948 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He attended the University of Manitoba, studying politics and literature, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fall 1971. Eastman became interested in film while studying under Frederick Edell, which led him to pursue filmmaking at the Film School of the University of Bristol. Soon after his graduation in 1975, Eastman wrote and directed Sweeter Song (a.k.a. Snapshot), his "career-launching" movie.

During his career, Allan Eastman has served as writer, director and executive producer for a number of movies, mini-series and television programs shot in Canada, the United States, Europe, Africa and Australia.. He directed the feature films The Warboy (1985), Crazy Moon (1986) and Danger Zone (1996) and directed and produced the mini-series Race for the Bomb (1987), Ford: The Man and the Machine (1988), and Champagne Charlie (1989). Eastman has also been executive producer for the television shows Nightman, Beastmaster and Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda. He has also directed over 200 episodes of such television shows as The Littlest Hobo, Road to Avonlea, Beachcombers, Danger Bay, Sliders, Nightman, F/X: the Series, Poltergeist: the Legacy, Gene Roddenberry's Earth: Final Conflict, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda, and Degrassi: the Next Generation.

Allan Eastman's mini-series, Ford: the Man and the Machine, was nominated for 7 Gemini Awards and won 3 including "Best Mini-Series." Race for the Bomb and Champagne Charlie also earned 7 Gemini nominations. Eastman has also received a Golden Reel Award, as the director of Ford, and a 2001 Leo Award for Andromeda as "Best Dramatic Series".

The fonds was donated to University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections by Allan Eastman in 2005.

Scope and content

The fonds is separated into eleven series. They include biographical material, feature films, mini-series, television shows, scripts & screenplays, background/research material, conventions, photograph collection (PC 204), audio recordings (TC 117), electronic records (EL 6), and ephemera. The photograph collection includes 853 photographs, 25 negatives, 16 slides, 445 sketches, 25 large sketches, and 17 posters (desginated as MC 15). The fonds also includes 293 VHS videocassettes, 163 U-matic videocassettes, 19 DVDs and 1 laser-disc. Audio recordings include 2 CDs and electronic records include 2 floppy discs and 1 CD-rom.
