Alfred Edmeads Cowley was born at Fairford, Rupert's Land in 1849. He was ordained Deacon on February 25, 1872, and Priest on September 24, 1876 by Archbishop of Canterbury. He served as a Missionary in Karachi, Sindh, Western India from 1872 to 1876. On Feb.14 of 1876 returned to England, on account of health, and on November 29, transferred to North-West America, at the Bishop's suggestion, to assist his aged father. He was the Incumbent for St. Clement's Church, Mapleton from 1876 to 1881, which in 1879 became independent of the Church Missionary Society. He received an offer to return to India in November 1880, but could not be carried into effect. He became Rector of St. James the Assiniboine, Winnipeg in 1881 and served until 1909, as well as Headingly from 1884 to 1911. He was the Assistant Secretary of the C.M. S. from 1881 until 1887. He was Co â Secretary of the C.M.S. for the Diocese with Robert Phair from 1887 to 1889, and Rural Dean of Selkirk from 1888 to 1911. He was made an Honorary Canon in 1910. Alfred Cowley was the son of Abraham Cowley, (M.14), and he married Hart Davies who was the Principal of the Ladies' College in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1878. Canon Cowley died in 1916.
