History

Leo Ahonen was born June 19, 1939 in Helsinki, Finland and began his dance training at the Finnish National Opera School at the age of six and joined the Finnish Ballet when he was fourteen years old. He studied at the Choreographic School of Ballet in Leningrad from 1957 to 1961. He won the bronze medal at the second International Varna Ballet Competition. He performed as a guest artist with the Bolshoi Ballet before becoming principal dancer, teacher, and ballet master for the Het National Ballet and the National Ballet of Finland. He was a principal dancer with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet during the 1966-1967 season. In 1969, he joined the San Francisco Ballet and left San Francisco for Houston in 1973. He returned in 1974 to perform as a guest artist with Soili Arvola. His final stage performance was in 1999 in Japan.
