Administrative history

The first mention of the Department of Nursing was made in 1921. The Department’s only responsibility at that time was the School of Nursing (formerly the Training School for Nurses) (See: F1 A1). Despite providing nursing students to various areas of the hospital since the School was founded in 1887, in 1924, Nursing Services became a distinct service under the School of Nursing. By 1959, Nursing Faculty was developed to provide continuing and updated education to nurses currently on the ward. In 1965, the Nursing Faculty and its programs were reorganized and augmented to form Inservice Education.

In 1972, Winnipeg General Hospital was re-branded as Health Sciences Centre (F3) but the Department remained as is. A shift occurred by 1988, during Dr. Joan Jenkins time as Director, with the merging of units under the Department of Nursing to create Nursing Education and Services. By the 1990s, Nursing Education and Services became Nursing Education and finally, after 1993, Clinical Education (See: F1 SF10)
