Administrative history

With the closing of the Children’s Hospital School of Nursing in 1969 and the subsequent closing of HSC’s School of Nursing in 1993. Nursing education had to be maintained through alternative resources. In 1993, through the work of Dr. Doug Kinley, Director of the HSC School of Nursing, the first Collaborative Nursing Baccalaureate Program in Manitoba was established, which was delivered under an affiliation agreement with the University of Manitoba Faculty of Nursing. The Program operated until 1997. From 1997 onward, during Dr. Joan Jenkins’ time as Director of Education and Research, an increasing emphasis was placed on nursing research. Thus, Dr. Jenkins responsibilities included the facilitation and support of research and keeping nurses informed about research activities that might affect patients in their care. The HSC Centre-Wide Nursing Education Program was established in 2003 through the leadership of Dr. Brenda Stutsky, Director of Nursing Innovation and Research, and is one of the first of its kind in Canada. As of 2011, Jannell Plouffe has stepped in as Director of Clinical Education, continuing to provide educational opportunities for nurses.
