Biographical history
Allen Gerald Bedford was born February 28, 1925 to parents Ernest Hamilton Bedford and Janet Ruth Iverach in Isabella, Manitoba. Bedford’s family moved to Melita, Manitoba, in 1938, where Bedford attended high school until his graduation in 1942. Bedford began his undergraduate degree at United College in 1943 and qualified for a General Bachelor of Arts degree in 1946, after having spent several years pursuing studies in English, Philosophy, and Mathematics. Bedford spent 1946-1948 lecturing in Mathematics at the College, while also conducting some graduate work and completing his fifth year of study in Arts and his Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree. Bedford graduated with a Master of Arts in Philosophy from the University of Manitoba in 1950, and a Ph.D. in English from the University of Toronto in 1957. Bedford joined the United College’s faculty in 1951, first as a professor of Mathematics, and, after receiving his Ph.D., for the following 40 years as a professor of English. While a member of the United College and University of Winnipeg faculty, Bedford was highly involved in the academic community as Registrar of United College, Advisor to Student Council, Dean of Men’s Residence, Chairman of the English Department, as an influential member on many faculty boards and committees, and was an active member of many professional associations. Bedford retired from the University of Winnipeg in 1991.
Bedford was awarded the Robin H. Farquhar Award for Excellence for contributions to the University in 1990, the Clifford J. Robson Memorial Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1991, the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1992, and was made a fellow of United College in 1993.
Bedford, who acted as University historian as well as professor, wrote a two volume history of the University of Winnipeg. The University of Winnipeg – A History of Founding Colleges was published in 1976 and was awarded the Margaret McWilliams Award. The University of Winnipeg: Volume II: The First Forty Years, 1967-2007 was published in 2007.
Bedford married Norma Jean Douglas on July 31, 1954. Together they had three sons: Douglas, Dale and James. Bedford passed away December 4th, 2008.
