Scope and content
Academic calendar for Clark Hall, the girls' residence and original building at Brandon College (Brandon, Manitoba) for the academic year 1914-1915. The 22-page booklet (plus five unpaginated pages of photos) contains a college overview, course information, rules and regulations, fees, relevant dates, and names of girls enrolled for the academic year 1913-1914. Found inside the booklet was a 3.8-cm square envelope with a blue ink image of a maple leaf, upon which is the label, "WESTERN UNIVERSITIES," and at the bottom, "196," and underneath, "CANADA." In fine print above the first label are the words "Overseas Battalion." In the centre of the image are four tiny squares inside of which are drawings that appear to be provincial coats of arms. The envelope likely contained a pin.

General note
Brandon College was established in 1899 by the Baptist Union of Western Canada as an affiliate of McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario and later as an affiliate of University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. The 3 1/2-storey brick and stone structure was built in 1900-1901 overlooking 18th Street north of Victoria Avenue. The adjoining Clark Hall was designed by Brandon architect W.A. Elliott and constructed with imported Georgia pine, opening on October 18, 1906. It was named after Winnipeg physician C.W. Clark, who supported women's education and who donated $30,000 out of the $40,000 cost of construction. Designed as a residence for up to 57 women and seven teachers, Clark Hall had 50 residence rooms as well as faculty rooms, a gymnasium, and the School of Music. In 1914-1915, it incorporated plumbing, hot and cold water, electric light, and steam heat. From 1963 to 1995, it was used by campus administration. Run-down and deemed unsafe in 1995, it was subsequently gutted and renovated. Additions included a fourth floor and a connection on the west side to the George T. Richardson Centre. Clark Hall was designated a provincial heritage site in 1992.
General note
President of Brandon College in 1914-1915 was Howard P. Whidden, B.A., D.D., LL.D.; Lady Principal was Ernestine R. Whiteside, B.A. Both were also faculty members. Dr. Whidden taught theology and ethics; Miss Whiteside taught German.
