History

Geographical and cultural context

The Royal Winnipeg Ballet was incorporated as a cultural non-profit organization and became a professional dance company in 1949.

Mandates/Sources of authority

The Royal Winnipeg Ballet Archives was created in the early 1990’s by the Alumni Association who wanted to preserve the RWB heritage through the development of the Archives. This dedicated group of volunteers began collecting and preserving records that document the founding and development of The Royal Winnipeg Ballet of Canada. The Company’s holdings date from its founding in 1939.
In 2010 the Board of the RWB has formally taken over the stewardship of the Company Archives. The Company will ensure the growth and development of the Archives while respecting archival principles. The Alumni will continue to provide their invaluable assistance to the Archives.
The Archives will collect, preserve and make accessible materials that document the founding and development of The Royal Winnipeg Ballet, including administrative, publicity and artistic records.

Administrative structure

Records management and collecting policies

The Royal Winnipeg Ballet Archives acquire records that document the history of and the people involved with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet.

The acquisitions are donated or made by accruals from the Company. All donations or accruals must be approved by the Archivist and the Secretary of the Board of Directors of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. These records become the property of the RWB Archives.

The Archives can also acquire collections or records from other sources. These acquisitions must be made in accordance with the policy. Whoever wants to donate records must give up the rights to the RWB Archives. Any donation or accrual from outside sources must be approved by the Archivist and the Secretary of the Board of Directors of the RWB.
The archives also collect secondary source documents (i.e. newspaper clipping or publications) that relate to the history of the RWB.

Buildings

The archives are housed in the Royal Winnipeg Ballet building at 380 Graham Avenue. The archives share office space with the RWB Alumni on the second floor, which is also the location of two other storage areas .
