Historical Background: Depot Battalions were organized in Canada in 1917-1918 to send to the Canadian Reserve Battalions in England. The 1st Depot Battalion, Manitoba Regiment was organized to provide reinforcements for the 16th, 27th, 43rd and 78th Battalions through the 11th Canadian Reserve Battalion and to the 8th, 44th, 52nd and 107th Battalions
through the 18th Canadian Reserve Battalion. The Battalion was commanded by Lieutenant-Colonel H.F. Osler.
